Description
Come see the Mount Royal 9/11 Flag Memorial display at the Frisco Historic Park on September 10, 2011
The USA Flag display was placed on Mount Royal on September 16, 2001 following the 9/11 attacks, the flag you see on display along with a memorial, were placed atop the summit of Peak 1 (elevation: 12,805’). A group of hikers, organized by local resident Kurt Kizer, wanted to express an act of remembrance, patriotism and community.
Kizer stated, “We were a brotherhood with the summit of that mountain…and that it was an ideal way to spend the solemn day.” Another group member who built the flag platform said, “…seeing the flag at the mountain’s summit reminds him of those lost on Sept. 11 and brings feelings of pride for his country.”
On a snowy September in 2002, several Summit County locals hiked to the top of Peak 1 to replace the tattered flag which had flown on the mountain for a year.
In 2003, a group made one last commemorative trek to replace the flag again.
