Description
The Oxfam America Hunger Banquet is designed as a participatory event. The banquet will feature speakers from the Family Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC) and High Country Conservation Center, who will shed light on issues regarding local hunger and poverty in Summit County. When attendees arrive, they will draw tickets that will assign them to an income level based on the latest global statistics about poverty. They will then represent that demographic at the banquet for the evening.
One in seven people around the globe go hungry, but it’s not the result of too little food. Hunger is about power relationships and the roots lie in inequalities and lack of access to resources. Colorado Mountain College’s Bachelor of Arts program in sustainability studies is sponsoring the Hunger Banquet in order to shed light on inequality as part of the program’s focus on the three E’s of sustainability: equality, economy and environment.
